Blog 24: Last Presentation Reflection

(1) Positive Statement

What are you most proud of in your block presentation and/or your senior project? Why?

- I'm most proud of having a lot of content information and not speaking so fast. For every one of my answers, I had a little over 10 minutes of content. As a whole, my entire presentation went from 8:05 to 9:20 with just one activity. I'm proud of being able to speak for so long without choking up so badly.

(2) Questions to Consider

a.     What assessment would you give yourself on your block presentation?  Use the component contract to defend that assessment.

AE       P          AP       CR       NC

- I would give myself a P+ because I justified all my answers, I had audience engaged and involved, I was professional (especially about topic), and I was organized.

b.     What assessment would you give yourself on your overall senior project? Use the component contract to defend that assessment.

AE       P          AP       CR       NC

- I would give myself a P+ because I did everything that was asked on component contact.

(3) What worked for you in your senior project?

- Having a lot of information and explaining it thoroughly worked. My activity worked great, it got the audience involved and thinking.

(4) (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your senior project?

- I would've cut content time shorter, to include all 3 activities in presentation to help audience understand what I'm saying a little more.

(5) Finding Value

How has the senior project been helpful to you in your future endeavors?   Be specific and use examples.

- The senior project has allowed me to learn a lot about the medical field that I thought I already knew, but didn't. I learned all about nursing, how to approach a patient, and just the basics about general healthcare. This will help as a foundation understanding when going into the medical field as a career.

Blog 23: Exit Interview

1) What is your essential question, and what are your answers?  What is your best answer and why?

- Essential Question: How can a primary care nurse best ensure the quality of care for patients?
- Answer 1: A primary care nurse can best ensure the quality care of patients by first taking some time to do some self-refection of their own.
- Answer 2: A primary care nurse can best ensure the quality of care of patients by then having direct communication.
- Answer 3: A primary care nurse can best ensure the quality of care for patients by then addressing spiritual beliefs.
- Best Answer: Having Direct Communication : Without this, nothing is possible between a patient and a nurse. This is the foundation of anything else that a patient and nurse discuss about.

(2) What process did you take to arrive at this answer?

- Process: During my mentorship, Nurse Rose Robledo, actually brought this up during one of our conferences. Immediately, I knew that this was true and very crucial when a patient and a doctor are communicating, so I decided to do research after research and understand it a lot better.

(3) What problems did you face?  How did you resolve them?

- When coming up with all three answers, looking for the right sources was a problem because there's so much information and especially information that can throw you off a bit. When I had an abundance of information, it was hard to try to keep it all in one place, or rely on everything - so I had to research even further and get exactly what I was looking for.

(4) What are the two most significant sources you used to answer your essential question and why?

- Two of the most significant sources that I used were: NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) and The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing.

Blog 22: Independent Component 2

LITERAL
(a)  “I, Itzia Chavez, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 31 hours of work.”
(b) Nurse Rose Robledo, my shadow mentor, has guided me and helped me throughout these last couple of months.
(c) Update your Independent Component 2 Log (which should be under your Senior Project Hours link)
(d) Throughout the months of March and April, Nurse Robledo and I (along with other assistant nurses) have worked very hard to attack my essential question and come up with answers to it. Every answer was then supported with details and sources and information, if it wasn't then it wasn't a reliable answer. We hung out a lot and worked together to try to figure out the importance of my topic and how it all connects together. Most of our time was spent trying to figure out details and evidence for ways to back up my 3 answers. So, some days were dedicated to a certain answer, and other days to another answer.
(e) Due to the fact that I can't take photos, I could only present a picture of me with my mentor Rose and also a letter in which she validates the 31 hours of my independent component with her.
(f) This independent component helped me answer my essential question because of that extra time spent with my mentor. During these hours, we would sit and talk about my essential question, breaking it down and coming up with answers that could be validated and supported. Each hour was very valuable to me because within it, I was able to grasp an idea, a quote, and an experience that made my essential question a lot easier to understand and answer as a whole. I was able to understand how my answers all tie in tougher and fall back on one another. I was able to pinpoint which answer is the backbone to my essential question and the rest of the answers.

Blog 21: Interview 4 Reflection

1. What is the most important thing I learned from the interview?

- The most important thing I learned from the interview was that making a patient comfortable, having good communication with them and their family, and allowing for a great relationship is essential when being a nurse.

2.  How will what I learned affect my final lesson?

- What I learn will affect my final lesson by allowing me to incorporate what was said as a source and reference back to it as a connection to my answers. I can use this interview of a way to support some answers and back up details that I've come up with already - supporting details.

Blog 19: Answer #3

1.  What is your EQ?

- How can a primary care nurse best ensure the quality of care for their patients?

2.  What is your third answer? (In complete thesis statement format)

- A primary care nurse can best ensure the quality of care for their patients by first allowing a self reflection period to themselves.

3.  List three reasons your answer is true with a real-world application for each.

- With the self-reflection period, nurses and doctors will be able to understand how they work before working with someone else and having a patient's hand in their hands.
- Self-reflection allows for a better relationship between patient and doctor, when coming to terms with expectations for service.
- Self reflection allows for the nurse or doctor to get their life together, process their issues, before even beginning something that can be quite overwhelming to a patient.

4.  What printed source best supports your answer?

- Olsen, Norman. "Self Reflection: Foundation for meanigful nursing practice." Reflection on Nursing Leadership. Reflection on Nursing Leadership, 4 Feb. 2014. Web. 2 Feb. 2016

5.  Tie this together with a concluding thought...

- I feel as though all my answers all tie in together. Without direct communication, a doctor or nurse  couldn't even address spiritual beliefs, and without self reflection period for the nurse or doctor, there could be a bit of misunderstandings, lack of effort, or even bad quality of care. It all ties in.

Blog 18: Answer #2

1.  What is your EQ?

- How can a primary care nurse best ensure the quality of care for their patients?

2.  What is your first answer? (In complete thesis statement format)

- A primary care nurse can best ensure the quality of care for their patients by first addressing any spiritual/religious beliefs.

3.  What is your second answer? (In complete thesis statement format)

- A primary care nurse can best ensure the quality of care for their patients by having constant direct communication with the patient.

4.  List three reasons your answer is true with a real-world application for each.

- With direct communications, less errors will be because the communication is direct: face to face.
- Direct communication avoids misunderstandings when something is passed down from a person to the next.
- Direct communication avoids errors when trying to communicate through phone, text, or email; reassurance that the person is actually listening.

5.  What printed source best supports your answer?

- Kourkouta, Lambrini, and Ioanna V. Papathanasiou. “Communication in Nursing Practice.” Materia Socio-Medica 26.1 (2014): 65–67. PMC. Web. 25 Feb. 2016.

6.  What other source supports your answer?

- Fong, Jennifer Ha. "Doctor-Patient Communication: A Review." Academic Division of Ochsner Clinic Foundation. The Other Journal, 2010. Web. Feb. 6 2016.
- Shukla, Ajay Kumar. "Doctor-Patient Communication: An Important but Often Ignored Aspect in Clinical Medicine." Indian Acadmey of Cinical Medicine (Journal). 2010. Web. 5 Feb. 2016.

7.  Tie this together with a concluding thought...

- I have an answer # 3, self-reflection. I feel as though all three answers all tie in hand-in-hand and create a very powerful essential question. My answer #2, isn't as vague as I thought it would be, because I clearly address that it's not just communication, it's 'DIRECT' communication.
